One of my favorite scriptures is 1 Nephi 1:1. "I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days."
The thing I love most about this scripture is that under the footnote for afflictions, it says "gifts of God."" I absolutely love this because God shows His love to us through gifts. He has given us so many gifts. A gift I am grateful for is trials and afflictions. I know that through these hard times, we learn the most about ourselves, and we grow! This time we have been given on earth is to grow and become like our Savior and Heavenly Father. And we can only become like Them through trials and afflictions. Sometimes, we think God must not love me because if He did, this would never happen to me. But the truth is the opposite. God loves me, and that's why these hard things are happening to me. For me it can be so hard to think that way in the midst of my trials but I know that during those hard times as I focus more on and draw closer to my Savior that I will understand what God has planned for me. I am so grateful to be a missionary and for all the things I am learning through my trials here. I love my Heavenly Father so much, and I am especially grateful for the gift of His son Jesus Christ, who can always help me and is the perfect example of who I want to be.
